afternoon passage and as it says here is not just words so the theme is not just does the word that is not the thing I think it's important to say what thing is not being is not it's not just an incomplete phrase because those things are topics in a topic is not the same as what is this famous tomorrow it's a lesson it's a complete statement it's what the Arthur would like for you to take away from having read that piece of is the central message how did how to determine theme think about the story elements think about the characters their actions think about acquaintance of their actions think about what they say that they think about this story takes place and how the author is communicate that message before you can determine theme of a text you have to read the text now purposes of this PowerPoint we are using two stories that we have read previously and I will be doing a summary to help solidify the details that which is the line contest II is the price of a smell flying contest Azhar name Boris health contest but he was so greedy that he cheated by saying that the stories were true putting a position to where no matter how he responded he probably would take home a large sum of money if I take a look at the story element I know Boris is greedy he's greedy and he's even willing to lie to keep all of his money he is clever he is so clever that he put himself in a position to how Boris respond Boris will have to give him a large sum of money so I think there's a lot of things that we can come up with we can say it doesn't pay the lot we can say that cheaters never win we can say a lot of different things so let's take a look at the one that we a clever person someone who is greedy and that is true the price of a smell a beggar sneaks into a wreck taking the smell of soup to go with his stale bread after having been turned down for free to buy the restaurant owner owner catches him and tries to make him pay for the smell of the suit The Hodges a wise judge agreed to pay the restaurant owner what the smell of soup is worth the sound of money charge to man some people so abandoned the beggar he's a beggar he does what he does he big he does have some like something that's a little bit more tasty to go with it so he sneaks into the restaurant not the best character to be sneaking into a restaurant how I didn't steal it so the restaurant owner seems kind of mean he doesn't get the man any soup and then he tries to charge him for smell sahaja bariwise taisen what the smell of the soup is word the sound of money Clank Clank restaurant owner that's what you got for you pay putting all those things together again a plethora a plethora of things that we can have so let's take a look at the one that we chose wise person never lets a greedy person win it doesn't pay to be greedy so these are two stories that again we read previous lady and we are reviewed Revisited Revisited the summary to help us come up with the theme a symbol extension of this sign Wesson we're going to compare the two things and we're going to look at making a decision about some other things that we came up with it so stories so I want you to take out a sheet of paper put a proper hair stay skip a line Center the title and this is your title common things and you can go ahead and number from 1 to 4 cuz there's going to be so give you the things and you're right either yes or no I guess if it fits stories it doesn't pay to lie so here you're either yes or no to say the price of a smell or the line or in the comment in the line contest so you'll say yes if it fits both know if it does not fit engine that we could do if it cartoon it doesn't pay angry in the line contest did it pay to be greedy in the price of a smell did it pay to be greedy the greedy never win does that one bit for the line contest to this one fit for the price of a snail don't break in a restaurant does this one apply for the line contrast does it apply for the price of a smell so I'm going to give you about to go through these rules that we applied to come up with your answer and then we will give you the answers so here we go 2 1 so let's go down to the first one it doesn't pay. Hear it. this one applies to the Rhine country because Boris was a liar however the restaurant owner did not lie this one doesn't it doesn't pay to be greedy applied to both of them bows the restaurant owner and Azar were greedy and they lost the Grady never win yes this one applies to both of the stories the Brady didn't win any break in a restaurant only apply to really doesn't apply to either one but it's just not a good idea to break into a restaurant but it was not a gene for story nothing bad happened to the beggar because he broke into the restaurant except he did have to go kind of like go to court that wasn't like the message this one didn't apply to either story this one only apply the line contest in these two our lesson on theme and stay tuned for more videos coming soon
